Logistical difficulties are hampering polyolefin supply chains, executive director of Sibur, Russia's largest integrated petrochemicals company, Sergey Komyshan told S&P Global Platts in an email interview.

"Currently, the major problems are logistics disruptions and lower demand in Europe, one of our key export markets, due to the quarantine [...] logistics bottlenecks caused by the quarantine may disrupt supplies for polyolefin processors in Europe " Komyshan said.

Commenting on the near-term outlook for 2020, Komyshan said "manufacturers are bracing for a serious recession in the second quarter."

Sibur's new ZapSib plant in Tobolsk , Russia, has allowed the company to increase production of polypropylene and polyethylene during the pandemic. The company said that this was part of its commitment to ensuring the availability of essential materials used for medical applications. Despite operational difficulties experienced by the industry as a result of social distancing measures and lockdown restrictions, Sibur said that it is continuing to deliver on all of its contractual obligations. Back in April, the company announced that it had agreed to expand cooperation with Netkanika, a major manufacturer of non-woven materials, to produce materials for single-use personal protective equipment.
